Wenger Linked With Serie A Side
Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is closing in on a return to football management with AC Milan.
The Frenchman has been out of work since leaving the Gunners at the end of last season after almost 22 years in charge.
Milan currently lie in fourth place in Serie A under their former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso and are looking for a return to Champions League football for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. But they lie ten points behind runaway leaders Juventus and the situation isn’t to the liking of new owner, the American hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation.
Elliott are owned by US billionaires Paul and Gordon Singer who took over earlier this year when they took on the debts of Chinese Li Yong Hong. The pair spend a lot of time in the UK and are known to be fans of Arsenal. Some sources in France and Italy claim the arrival of Wenger is almost a done deal and that his appointment could be announced in the coming days.
The 69-year-old would replace Gattuso and could even have a role alongside sporting director Leonardo.
Gattuso was appointed head coach at the end of November 2017 when he stepped up from the youth team to replace Vincenzo Montella. He led the side to sixth place and Europa League football for this season. Milan also reached the final of the Coppa Italia where they were beaten by Juventus.
