Agents Point To Deal For Chilean
Manchester United’s hopes of awarding new contracts to goalkeeper David de Gea and striker Anthony Martial are being hampered by Alexis Sanchez’s huge pay packet.
Sanchez moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal at the end of January. No cash changed hands for the Chile international although winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan headed to the Emirates as part of the deal.
But United were only to prevent Sanchez from joining local rivals Manchester City by paying him a basic wage of £400,000 a week. He also earns £75,000 for every appearance and there is a bonus structure on top of that that takes the final figure to over £500,000 a week.
However, Sanchez’s pay deal is being used by representatives of other players to demand huge pay rises.
De Gea and Martial are both out of contract at the end of the season although there are options in either player’s deal to extend by a further year.
De Gea currently earns £175,000 a week and is looking for a new contract that would put him on around £300,000 a week. Given his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the world his representatives believe that isn’t an unrealistic proposition.
Martial’s situation is a little more complex given that he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order following Sanchez’s arrival. There have also been reported clashes with Jose Mourinho.
The France international is currently on £70,000 a week and Manchester United are looking to double his wages, but a deal remains out of reach.
Martial is on run of form at the moment. His equalising goal in the 2-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday was his fifth in his last appearances for the club and it brought his total to the season for six.
