”We Were Champions Together”
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he would love to sign Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. However, he believes the chances of such a move happening to be close to zero.
Hazard has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge although he admitted earlier this week he had been told by Chelsea in the summer that he wouldn’t be allowed to leave.
But speaking at a press conference ahead of today’s Premier League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea, Mourinho reminded reporters that the two men won the title during their time together at Stamford Bridge.
“We had a good relationship, we were champions together, so I think the feelings are good,” Mourinho said.
“History says that when Eden Hazard is the best player in the Premier League, Chelsea is the champion.
“It happened with me, it happened with Antonio [Conte]. The season is still in the beginning of course but, if he is the best player of the Premier League until now, which I think he is, Chelsea is top of the league because he’s the kind of player who can make a huge difference.
“I would love to have him in Manchester United but I don’t think Chelsea will sell him to Manchester United.
“It’s a non-problem because Chelsea are led by intelligent and experienced people in football and I think they would never sell Eden to Manchester United.”
Martial Set For Exit?
Meanwhile, United forward Anthony Martial appears intent on leaving the club.
The France international has turned down a number of offers from the club to sign a new contract.
His current deal expires at the end of the season although United have the option to extend the contract by an additional year. The club are expected to trigger the extension clause by the end of the year. If they don’t, then Martial will be free to speak to overseas clubs from 1 January.
Martial was linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the summer. However, the club dug in their heels and told him he was going nowhere.
But the 22-year-old has failed to nail down a regular place in the starting line-up under Jose Mourinho. He has started in just three of United’s eight Premier League games so far this season – and he was substituted in two of those.
Team-mate Luke Shaw looks set to sign a new five-year deal at Old Trafford. But Martial seems intent on leaving.
Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus are monitoring his situation.
