Lopetegui Has Ten Days To Save His Job
Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is being linked with interest from Real Madrid should the La Liga side sack Julen Lopetegui.
Lopetegui has been in charge at the Bernabeu for just four months. But the side have got off to a disappointing start to the season with two defeats from their opening eight La Liga games and a shock reversal at the hands of CSKA Moscow in the Champions League earlier this month.
Real face three games in the next ten days including a clash with arch-rivals Barcelona in El Clasico next weekend. Those three games will determine whether or not Lopetegui stays in his job.
But according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Antonio Conte received a phone call from Madrid on Monday of this week sounding him out over whether he would be interested in replacing Lopetegui.
Conte has been out of work since leaving Chelsea in the summer. He effectively left at the end of last season but the spent weeks locked in legal wrangles with the club over the terms of his dismisal.
The Italian was linked with a move to AC Milan but the Serie A club’s Italian owners decided to stick with Gennaro Gattuso. Now, he is waiting in the wings for Real to call.
The European champions face Levante at the Bernabeu in La Liga on Saturday. They then host Viktoria Plzen in a Champions League clash they are expected to win. Finally, they travel to the Nou Camp next Sunday to take on Barcelona. It is this final game that will particularly decide Lopetegui’s future.
