Messi And Co Want Frenchman At Nou Camp
Barcelona players, including Lionel Messi, want the club to launch a bid for Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.
The World Cup winner is being linked with a move away from Old Trafford following a worsening of his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho. The two men were seen to arguing on the United training ground last month.
Barcelona are known to be keeping tabs on Pogba’s situation at Old Trafford. The Catalan side lodged a bid during the summer of £40million plus defender Yerry Mina and winger Andre Gomes. That bid was dismissed out of hand by United.
But reports from Spain claim that senior players in the Barcelona side such as Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique want the club to sign Pogba. Coach Ernesto Valverde is also keen but the club’s scouts believe Barca’s style of play calls for a midfielder with greater positional sense who takes fewer risks than Pogba.
Barca are weighing up a bid in any case. The Catalan side are watching Pogba as well as Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot and Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong and will make moves for two of those players next summer.
Pogba’s price tag makes him the odd-man out compared to the £40-50million de Jong and Rabiot who will be available on a free transfer next summer as things stand. Nine-figure deals for Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho along with the Catalan side’s huge wage bill mean Barca are financially stretched despite reporting income of €960million last summer. But profit was only €11million.
Pogba had two disappointing performances for France in the international break. He was substituted in the match with Iceland with Les Bleus 2-0 down. They recovered to earn a 2-2 draw. He was also substituted with the side 1-0 down to Germany earlier this week. France ran out 2-1 winners.
Pereira Reveals What Caused Pogba-Mourinho Row
Meanwhile, Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira has confirmed that Pogba’s training-ground spat with Jose Mourinho was over an Instagram video.
Pogba was dropped for the Carabao Cup defeat to Championship side Derby County, but he posted an Instagram video taken during the game of him laughing and joking with team-mates Pereira and Luke Shaw.
Now the Belgium-born Brazil international has admitted that the training-ground bust-up with Mourinho occurred over a misunderstanding about the video.
“We were winning the game 1-0 at the time of the video,” he told UOL in Brazil.
“Then we lost the game, and people said that Pogba posted later. But he posted before.
“The manager thought that Pogba had posted later. He asked him why that had happened. There was a mood about it. These things were out here in England. But I have nothing to do with it.”
Pogba is currently back with Manchester United preparing for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.
