Axe Set To Drop If Results Don’t Improve
Newcastle United are eyeing up a move for Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers to replace Rafa Benitez.
The Magpies have picked up just two points from their opening eight Premier League games so far this season. They watched a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes to go disappear at Manchester United last weekend to lose to stoppage-time goal.
The Daily Mirror claims that Rodgers is one of the names in the frame if Benitez can’t arrest Newcastle’s winless run.
The Magpies’ only points of the season have come in goalless draws against Cardiff City and Crystal Palace. But five of their six defeats so far have come against sides that ended last season in the Premier League’s top six.
Newcastle’s next three fixtures are against Brighton, Southampton and Watford. The club’s hierarchy will look to the side to pick up points against some of the league’s lesser lights.
Rodgers was linked earlier this month with the vacant manager’s position at Aston Villa. However, no formal approach was made to Celtic and the former Liverpool boss remains at Parkhead.
