Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar has been in touch with Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba over a move to the French club.
Reports today claim the two men are close friends and that Neymar tried to persuade Pogba to move to Barcelona when he looked likely to leave Juventus in 2016. In the end, United’s deeper pockets meant Pogba moved back to Old Trafford four years after he left Manchester United.
Pogba’s relationship with Jose Mourinho has been on a downward trajectory ever since United signed Alexis Sanchez at the end of January. The France World Cup winner has been forced to play in a deeper-lying role since Sanchez’s arrival. Bickering between Pogba and Mourinho became obvious during the second half of last season and it has only worsened in this campaign.
But Neymar’s efforts will have to be doubled up. He also needs to convince PSG chairman Nasser al-Khlaifi to sign Pogba. PSG are known to be keen on a move for the Parisian. However, the Ligue 1 leaders are in the middle of a Uefa probe into their finances. The investigation was reopened earlier this summer amidst concerns that sponsorship deals signed by the club with entities in Qatar were worth far less than the price being paid. That had the effect of inflating their revenues and reducing their losses. If Uefa find PSG guilty they may have to sell players rather than buy.
The latest rumours about Jose Mourinho are as conflicting as ever. Some outlets claim he could be sacked this week if United get another poor result against Newcastle at Old Trafford later today. However, the BBC claims he has the support of the United board and there is no immediate threat to his position.
Today’s game is United’s last for two weeks. Players will be on international duty next weekend.
