Maier In Arsenal Sights
Arsenal are watching Hertha Berlin midfielder Arne Maier.
The 19-year-old is being monitored by Gunners’ scouts although he is also being watched by Premier League rivals Manchester United and La Liga giants Barcelona.
Maier has impressed this season for a Hertha side that has taken seven points from their opening three Bundesliga games. He made his debut for the side as an 18-year-old during the 2016-17 campaign and has gone on to make 25 first-team appearances for the club.
Barcelona have also sent scouts to watch Maier whose contract with Hertha runs to 2022. Press reports from Germany are suggesting he won’t leave Hertha until 2020 at the earliest giving him this season and next season to rack up some playing time for the Bundesliga side.
Speaking to German newspaper Kicker at the end of July, Maier suggested that playing time on the pitch is important to him and that he isn’t looking to leave the club just yet.
“I get a lot of playing time, we have an exciting squad. This is my city and my club – it’s doesn’t get much better than that at 19,” said the Berlin-born Maier. At the time he had just signed a new deal with Hertha despite numerous enquiries from clubs in Germany and abroad.
“At some point in the future maybe the time will come to leave, but when that will be, no one knows at the moment,” added the Germany Under-19 international. “I’m still far from that point, that’s for sure.”
Maier is one of the 100 nominees for Tuttosport’s Golden Boy award given to the best under- 21 player in Europe. But he is already setting out his short-term goals.
“My first season was indescribable, but now the road has to continue – I want to be more attack-minded – goals, assists, crosses into the box. That was always the case in the youth team. That’s what I want to do in the Bundesliga.”
