Manchester United Also Rumoured To Be Interested
Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is a target for Turkish giants Fenerbahce according to reports.
The former Germany international has come into conflict with new boss Unai Emery over his work-rate. He responded by phoning in sick ahead of the recent clash with West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium. However, he was restored to the line-up for the victory over Cardiff City last weekend.
The Daily Star claims Fenerbahce and Manchester United are both interested in Ozil. As it stands neither club is likely to put in a successful bid. United’s interest seems to be overstated with Jose Mourinho having more pressing concerns in other aspects of his side particularly his defence.
Fenerbahce have long been linked with Ozil and he once stated that he would love to move to the Istanbul side later in his career. The problem for both sides at the moment is that Ozil is Arsenal’s highest-paid player on a wage of over £350,000 a week. The financial aspects of any deal are important to him. Fenerbahce can afford nowhere near that amount.
The Super Lig outfit have debts estimated at around €800million and were counting on qualification for the Champions League to ease their financial worries. But they are already out of this season’s competition having been defeated by Benfica in the third qualifying round. They are now in the Europa League where they have been drawn in a group containing Dinamo Zagreb, Spartak Trnava and Anderlecht.
The only way Ozil will move to Fenerbahce is if he takes a huge cut in pay. That isn’t likely at present.
