Manchester United, Tottenham Draw Deadline-Day Blanks
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes the actions of Paul Pogba’s agent in offering him to Barcelona and Juventus this summer has damaged the player’s relationship with the club. United failed in their efforts to sign a new central defender on transfer deadline day. Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s season-long loan move to Fulham was the only bit of business done by the club.
Manchester United were linked on Thursday with Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin. However, their £18m bid failed and it later emerged that his agent had used the bid to get a better deal out of the La Liga side.
Manchester United were prepared to pay £100m for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane according to reports.
Everton tried to sign Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo on deadline-day only for the deal to be scuppered by United’s failure to sign a replacement. Everton did sign Yerry Mina from Barcelona for £27m although the La Liga side have an option to buy him back for €60m (£54m). Winger Andre Gomes has also moved to Goodison Park from Barcelona. Gomes joins on a season-long loan. Another loan move, for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma, awaits ratification from the Premier League. Free agent Bernard has also moved to Goodison Park. Middlesbrough’s bid to sign Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic collapsed in a disagreement over agents’ fees. A loan move to Boro now looks likely for both Besic and winger Yannick Bolasie.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina will move to Besiktas on a season-long loan rather than a permanent transfer.
Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign any new players either on transfer deadline day or over the whole of the summer. Manager Mauricio Pochettino failed in a last-minute bid to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa. Pochettino blamed the rising cost of their new stadium – to almost £1billion – and the collapse of the pound due to fears over Brexit as the reason the club made no new signings. It is the first time since the summer transfer window was introduced in 2003 that Spurs have signed no new players. Tottenham left-back Danny Rose is being linked with a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain. It follows rumours earlier this week of a temporary switch to Bundesliga side Schalke.
Fulham were the busiest club on deadline day with five news signings. Along with Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s season-long move from Manchester United the Cottagers have also signed Atletico Madrid forward Luciano Vietto and Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico on loan deals. Left-back Joe Bryan has moved from Bristol City for £6m but midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa joins from Marseille for a fee of £22.3m.
Newcastle United have signed defender Federico Fernandez from Swansea City on a two-year deal for £6m.
Liverpool striker Danny Ings has joined Southampton on loan.
Leicester City have signed two new defenders. Croatia Under-21 international Filip Benkovic has joined from Dinamo Zagreb for £13m while Turkey international Caglar Soyuncu moves from Bundesliga side Freiburg in a deal worth up to £19m.
Watford failed in a bid to sign Juventus midfielder Stefano Sturaro. He now looks set to move to Sporting Lisbon. The Hornets did sign striker Domingos Quina from West Ham United.
Cardiff City have signed Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter and Real Betis midfielder Victor Camarasa both on loan.
Crystal Palace signed Swansea City forward Jordan Ayew on loan.
Brighton signed defenders Martin Montoya from Valencia and Dan Burn from Wigan Athletic for undisclosed fees. Burn has returned to Wigan until January as he recovers from an injury sustained pre-season. Seventeen-year-old midfielder Peter Gwargis joins from Swedish second division side Jonkopings.
Wolves have signed Anderlecht’s highly-rated midfielder Leander Dendoncker on loan.
Huddersfield Town have signed midfielder Isaac Mbenza from Montpellier on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.
West Ham United signed striker Lucas Perez from Arsenal for £4m and midfielder Carlos Sanchez from Fiorentina. It takes the total number of new faces at the London Stadium to nine.
