Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes that Paul Pogba’s relationship with the club has been further damaged by the actions of his agent.

Pogba’s relationship with Mourinho became rocky during the second half of last season. That was after he was forced to play in a much deeper role following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez during the January transfer window.

But Pogba was touted around some of Europe’s top clubs by his agent Mino Raiola. Barcelona were interested and offered €45million m(£40million) plus defender Yerry Mina and winger Andre Gomes – two players that have ended up at Everton. Raiola also went back to Pogba’s former club Juventus.

United insisted that Pogba was not for sale but Mourinho believes that Raiola was not acting in the best interests of either the player or the club by offering him for sale.

Pogba returned to pre-season training earlier this week but it remains to be seen if he plays a role in tonight’s season opener with Leicester City at Old Trafford.

United endured a disappointing transfer deadline day with no new signings. Reports of a move for Atletico Madrid central defender Diego Godin were correct. However, Manchester United were knocked back when it emerged that Godin’s agent had used United’s £18million bid to secure a better deal from the La Liga side.

Rumours of deadline-day moves for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng all came to nothing.

It means Jose Mourinho has made three signings this summer the most significant of which was the capture of Brazilian winger Fred from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. Young full-back Diogo Dalot was signed from FC Porto and veteran keeper Lee Grant arrived from Stoke City. But there was no new central defender.

Meanwhile, one defender on his way out of Old Trafford is Timothy Fosu-Mensah who has gone on loan to Fulham for the rest of the season.
