Manchester United Turn To Zouma As Boateng Heads Elsewhere

United Struggling To Recruit New Defender

Kurt Zouma Manchester United transfer news

Manchester United could turn to Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma as Jose Mourinho seeks a new signing at centre-back before today’s transfer deadline.

The news comes as Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur dig in their heels over Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld respectively and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng could on his way elsewhere.

Zouma spent last season on loan at Stoke City where he played in 34 of the Potters’ 38 Premier League games and impressed despite the side being relegated to the Championship.

But he has returned to a Chelsea side where there a number of other centre-backs vying for two spots and reports from France claim he could be set for another season away from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea might be unwilling to entertain a deal that would strengthen a rival at the top end of the Premier League although they could change their minds if United include Anthony Martial in any deal. At present that looks unlikely as Martial still appears in Jose Mourinho’s plans for the coming season even if only as a squad player.

United have put in two bids for Harry Maguire the latest of which was for £60million. But Leicester are reluctant to sell despite lining up two replacements for the England international in the shape of Felip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu.

Similarly, Tottenham and United have been unable to come to an agreement over Alderweireld. Spurs are playing a dangerous game as the Belgium international has only twelve months left on his current deal and a release clause of £25million kicks in if Tottenham trigger the option of a one-year extension. That compares to their current valuation of £75million. There could be some movement on that deal today.

But the news of Jerome Boateng isn’t good. Manchester United were linked earlier this week with a move for the Germany international. That’s despite him turning 30 next month. But United were only interested in a season-long loan and there is now news of a deal with Paris Saint-Germain.

French newspaper Le Parisien claims Boateng has agreed personal terms with the Ligue 1 champions. Bayern were looking for a fee of €60million but could be prepared to accept €45million (£40million).

Any deal between PSG and Bayern needn’t take place today. While the Premier League’s transfer deadline is at 5pm much of Europe can do deals for the rest of the month.
