United Offer To Pay £18m Release Fee
Manchester United have failed in an attempt to sign central defender Diego Godin from Atletico Madrid.
The Uruguay international was in the final year of his contract with Atletico in a deal that has a release clause of €20million (just under £18million). But according to Sky Sports, United were told by Godin’s representatives that he has just signed a new contract with Atletico and will spend at least one more season at the Wanda Metropolitano.
United’s approach is a surprise. Godin is now 32 years old and the fact that they are chasing a player over the age of 30 on transfer deadline day smacks of desperation.
The Uruguayan is just about to start his tenth season with Atletico and he still harbours hopes of winning the Champions League title with the club.
United’s offer is a generous one. They were willing to pay over £150,000 a week to land Godin.
The Premier League side are desperate to bring in a centre-back at the end of a disappointing transfer window for Jose Mourinho. They have been linked with Harry Maguire of Leicester City, Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur, Jerome Boateng of Bayern Munich and Yerry Mina of Barcelona but hopes of signing any of those players appear to be slipping away.
Brazilian winger Fred, left-back Diogo Dalot and goalkeeper Lee Grant are the three players United have signed this summer.
