Godin Agent ‘Used’ Manchester United To Get New Deal

Player’s Agent Approached United

Diego Godin Manchester United transfer news

The agent of Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin used Manchester United to secure a new deal from the La Liga side.

That’s according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solekhol in the last instalment of United’s bid to sign a new central defender.

Godin is 32 and as such he is beyond the age at which United tend to look at new players. But with time running out in the transfer window and bids for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina all seemingly having failed, a move for the Uruguay international seemed desperate if not unusual.

The word earlier today was that Godin had rejected United’s approach as he has just signed a new deal with Atletico. United were prepared to pay his €20million (£18million) release fee with Atletico along with wages of £150,000 a week.

But according to Solekhol it wasn’t United who approached Godin – but the other way round.

Godin’s agent made contact with United earlier this week while Atletico were in Cagliari. He said that the defender was keen to come to Old Trafford and that a deal could be done. United then made an offer which the agent took to Atletico’s board.

Within hours, the centre-back had signed a new contract with Atletico worth €7.5million a year in his hand. It seems the agent had used United’s offer to get a better deal for Godin.
