Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has warned that the side faces a “difficult” season if his squad isn’t strengthened by Thursday’s transfer deadline. United are expected to make a world-record bid for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire. Transfer target Yerry Mina looks set to move to Everton from Barcelona for a fee of £28m. Everton are also being linked with a move for one of Manchester United centre-backs Chris Smalling or Victor Lindelof if they fail to sign Marcos Rojo. However, a successful move for Mina by the Toffees could rule out the need for any centre-back from United.

Manchester United have also contacted Bayern Munich over the availability of Germany international centre-back Jerome Boateng. United central defender Axel Tuanzebe could be heading to Aston Villa on loan. Timothy Fosu-Mensah could be heading on loan to Hertha Berlin.
