Martial Linked With Old Trafford Stay
Manchester United striker Anthony Martial looks set to remain at Old Trafford.
France international Martial has landed himself in hot water with Jose Mourinho after leaving the club’s training camp near Miami to attend the birth of his daughter. However, he failed to return until after the squad got back to the UK in a move that could land him with a fine.
Martial is keen to move away from Old Trafford. He fell down the pecking order in the second half of last season following the arrival from Arsenal of Alexis Sanchez. But he finds himself backed into a corner by the club’s demands.
United want £80million for Martial – a price tag that has deterred overseas clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. PSG can’t make such a deal pay while remaining within Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations. Juventus signed Cristiano Ronaldo for around £100million and that has ruled out a move for Martial.
The Daily Mirror claims today that a swap deal was mooted between Manchester United and Chelsea which would have seen Martial move to Stamford Bridge and Willian head to Old Trafford. But age has been a persistent factor in Jose Mourinho failing to sign his intended transfer targets. Willian turns 30 next week – Martial is 22. The Old Trafford hierarchy failed to see the logic in giving up a youthful player for one who is arguably past his peak. Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri said on Friday that he expects the Brazilian to stay.
Martial could play a role in next week’s season opener when United take on Leicester City at Old Trafford. Romelu Lukaku is only just due to return to pre-season training and is unlikely to start next Friday’s game.
PSG Keen On Rojo
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain have joined the race for Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo. The Argentina defender could make way if United recruit a new centre-back before next Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Everton have been linked with Rojo who is valued at £20million by United. But Paris Saint-Germain have now expressed an interest and join the Toffees, Marseille and Zenit St Petersburg in the race for Rojo’s signature.
