Manchester United Eye Up Zidane As Mourinho Replacement

Former Real Coach To Replace United Boss?

Zinedine Zidane Manchester United manager

Manchester United will turn to Zinedine Zidane as their new manager if Jose Mourinho walks out on the club. That’s according to one report today.

Mourinho is already the bookies’ favourite to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season. It follows reports that he is unhappy over the club’s inability to recruit his summer transfer targets. None of the five transfer targets he gave to United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward have arrived at the club.

The Portugese coach often gets restless during his third season at a club and the only time he has completed a third campaign was at Chelsea when he got through the 2006-07 season only to be sacked later that year.

According to The Sun, United have Zidane at the top of their managerial wish-list should Mourinho quit. The Frenchman is currently out of work having left Madrid at the end of May just days after guiding the side to a third consecutive Champions League triumph. Zidane has been linked with a role in the sporting secretariat at Serie A side Juventus although that has yet to come to fruition.

United have made three signings so far this summer: Brazilian midfielder Fred, young full-back Diogo Dalot and goalkeeper Lee Grant who is viewed as a back-up keeper.

Mourinho Still In The Dark Over Martial

Mourinho has railed against striker Anthony Martial after he left the club’s training camp in Miami last week to attend the birth of his daughter. The United boss complained at the weekend that the Frenchman now ought to be back with the rest of the squad.

But speaking after his side defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in an a pre-season friendly in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Mourinho snapped “I don’t know” when asked about when Martial will return.

The striker wants to leave Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order at the club.

Willian Absent From Chelsea

One Manchester United transfer target is the Chelsea winger Willian. But the Brazil international has yet to arrive for pre-season training at the west London club’s Cobham training complex.

Passport issues are being given as the reason for Willian’s absence with a failure to renew his passport ahead of a return to Britain. But the 29-year-old has been linked with interest from both United and Real Madrid although he insists he is happy at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho is known to be an admirer of Willian while Real are prepared to pay £65million to entice him to the Bernabeu.

Chelsea aren’t convinced by the player’s excuses which comes a year after Diego Costa refused to return to training ahead of a move to Atletico Madrid. But some reports claim his passport was full when he went to return to the UK and it would take a minimum of three days to sort out.

Shaw To See Out Contract?

Meanwhile, United full-back Luke Shaw could see out his contract with the club. The former England international has attracted the attentions of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. However, he has no desire to leave Old Trafford.

Shaw becomes a free agent next summer and he can talk to overseas clubs from January of next year. He was linked in January of this year with interest from Newcastle United, but the Magpies were only interested in a loan deal and refused to meet Manchester United’s £20million valuation for a permanent switch.
