Spurs, Valencia Also Keen On Arsenal Target
Arsenal are reported to be in talks with Barcelona forward Andre Gomes over a move to north London. However, the Gunners face competition for his signature from their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and also from Gomes’s former club Valencia.
Portugal international Gomes has been left off Barcelona’s pre-season tour of North America as he prepares to leave the Nou Camp after two disappointing seasons.
Reports over the weekend claimed that Arsenal were at the front of the queue for a player who turns 25 at the end of this month. That has been partly backed up by reports in France claiming that talks are already under way over a move to the Emirates.
Spurs are also keen on Gomes with the the player apparently keen to work alongside Mauricio Pochettino.
But Gomes’s former club Valencia are keen to bring him back to the Mestalla. SuperDeporte claims that the La Liga side are prepared to spend some of the windfall they will earn from playing in the Champions League this season on a move for the forward.
Valencia received €35million (around £31million) from Barcelona for Gomes. There was also the provision for up to €20million in add-ons and bonuses. However, Los Che are looking to do a loan deal with an option to purchase next summer.
Barcelona would prefer a permanent switch with a fee of around €20million. That would prevent them from making a capital loss on the player once amortisation is taken into account. However, Arsenal will only go as high as €18million (£16million). Performance-related bonuses could take the fee over the €20million mark and Barcelona would demand a percentage of any future proceeds.
Gomes made just six starts in La Liga last season following the arrival of Ernesto Valverde. Barcelona have already signed Gomes’s replacement in the shape of Brazilian Arthur who arrived last week from Gremio in a deal worth £27million.
