Torreira Is A Gunner
Arsenal have announced the arrival of midfielder Lucas Torreira. The Uruguay international moves from Serie A side Sampdoria in a deal worth £26million.
Torreira becomes the Gunners’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of goalkeeper Bernd Leno, central defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and left-back Stephane Lichtsteiner.
“In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game,” Arsenal boss Unai Emery told the club’s official website.
“A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”
Torreira began his career in his native Uruguay with IA 18 Julia and Montevideo Wanderers before joining Italian side Pescara in 2013. He moved to Sampdoria in 2015 returning on loan to Pescara for the 2015-16 campaign. He made a total of 71 appearances for Sampdoria during his two seasons with the club.
Torreira refused to have a medical with Arsenal until after Uruguay’s involvement in the World Cup. They were knocked out by France with a 2-0 defeat last Friday. He then flew to London rather than back to Uruguay to complete his Arsenal transfer. Gunners fans tracked his flight on the internet.
“I feel calm,” he said. “I am used to coping with this kind of thing in the best possible way. It’s a very positive thing that people want to welcome me. It makes me feel comfortable. Now I am calm and I look forward to the future, which for sure will be very nice.”
Torreira will wear the number 11 shirt at Arsenal.
