Juventus Talks Progressing
Manchester United have made enquiries about signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. However, the Red Devils have been told that enough progress has been made in talks between the player, Madrid and Juventus.
Reports of a Ronaldo move away from Real Madrid became public earlier this week. A meeting took place on Wednesday between his agent Jorge Mendes, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the club’s chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez. Perez and Sanchez demanded a formal offer from Juventus of €100million (£88million) in order to take seriously the situation.
But according to The Independent, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward made an enquiry about Ronaldo after hearing the Juventus rumours. The United supremo is looking for a ‘marquee’ summer signing. However, he was told that there had been significant progress in talks with the Serie A club.
Manchester United are wary of buying players over the age of 30. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was an exception, but the Swede came on a free transfer and signed only an initial one-year deal. Ronaldo is looking to sign a four-year contract with Juventus worth around £500,000 a week. Bastian Schweinsteiger was 30 when he arrived in a £10million move from Bayern Munich in 2015, but his time at the club wasn’t considered a success.
A move to Juventus for Ronaldo isn’t entirely done and dusted. The Serie A club need to partly finance the deal through the sale of players.
That could lead to Manchester United reviving their interest in Juventus right-back Alex Sandro. The Red Devils have been linked with the Brazil international for much of the year. However, the signing of Diogo Dalot from Porto last month led to them cooling their interest in Sandro.
Eight Defenders Targetted
Manchester United have eight centre-backs on their wishlist as Jose Mourinho attempts to bolster his defence.
A central defender looks to be a high priority for United as they head towards the final month of the transfer window. The deadline has been brought forward to 9 August – just 24 hours before United open their campaign with the visit of Leicester City on the evening of 10 August.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Raphael Varane of Real Madrid, Jose Gimenez of Atletico Madrid and Alessio Romagnoli are close to the top of Mourinho’s list. But Varane remains committed to Madrid while Gimenez and Romagnoli signed new deals with their respective clubs last month.
Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur remains a target, but the two clubs are about £20million apart in their respective valuations. Milan Srkiniar has ruled out an exit from Inter Milan, Freiburg’s Caglar Soyuncu is more keen on a move to Arsenal and Napoli will dig in their heels over Kalidou Koulibaly.
That just leaves Jerome Boateng of Bayern Munich but his stock has fallen since a disappointing World Cup with Germany.
