Manchester United are being linked with a move for Stoke City midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri. Reports today claim that Jose Mourinho is considering a bid for the Switzerland international.

Shaqiri, has a clause in his contract with the Potters that allows him to leave for £12million if they are relegated from the Premier League. Liverpool have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old although that particular trail appears to have gone cold.

But the midfielder is keen to stay in England. Speaking to Sporx he said: “I want to stay in the Premier League, and you will find out my new club soon.”

Shaqiri had a good World Cup with Switzerland getting on the score sheet once as the side reached the last 16.

Darmian, Mandzukic Swap Deal?

Meanwhile, reports that Manchester United are considering a swap deal involving left-back Matteo Darmian and Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic ought to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The Daily Mirror claims that such a deal is under consideration with Juve keen to bring Darmian back to Italy. The paper claims that the rumours have been circulating in Italy that Mandzukic will be included to make Darmian’s move a player-swap deal.

United have previously asked for €20million (£17.5million) for Darmian with Juventus trying to get the price down to £13million plus around £1million in add-ons and bonuses.

But Mandzukic’s scoring record with Juve is nothing to write home about. He has scored 22 goals in 93 Serie A appearances over the three seasons since his move to Italy in 2015. Last season he managed just five in 27 league starts and five appearances off the bench.

The Croatia international’s age is also an issue. Mandzukic turned 32 in May. United rarely sign players over the age of 30 and when they do it tends to be on short-term deals. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was an exception to the 30-year rule. But he arrived on a free transfer from PSG and only signed one-year contracts at Old Trafford. With Ibrahimovic and another player over 30, Bastian Schweinsteiger, it was injuries that became the issue.

A Manchester United move for Mandzukic looks unlikely.
