Kovacic Asks To Leave Real Madrid

Manchester United Linked But A Return To Serie A More Likely

Mateo Kovacic Real Madrid transfer news

Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic has asked the club for a transfer according to reports from Spain.

The Croatia international – currently at the World Cup in Russia – has been waiting for the dust to settle surrounding the appointment of Julen Lopategui as the new coach at the Bernabeu. But according to the Spanish radio network Cadena COPE he has come to the conclusion that he will get just as little game time under Lopategui that he did under former boss Zinedine Zidane. His representatives have met with Real and have asked that he be sold.

Kovacic started just ten games in La Liga last season and was a substitute in 11 more. That compared with 19 starts and eight appearances off the bench in the 2016-17 campaign. In terms of league minutes played he managed 988 last season against 1688 the previous season.

Manchester United were linked earlier this month with Kovacic. But the 24-year-old is more likely to head back to Serie A. He moved from Inter Milan to Real Madrid in August 2015 for a fee of €35million (at that time worth £28million). Inter are keen to have him back. However, they need to sell before they can buy in order to remain within Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

Juventus are also believed to be keen as are Napoli.
