Arsenal are set to have talks with the agent of Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega. The 29-year-old is currently at the World Cup in Russia as part of the Argentina squad. He came on as a second-half substitute and played for 36 minutes in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Iceland.

Reports from Italy claim that Marcelo Simonian – who acts as Banega’s representative – is ready to have talks with Arsenal in the coming days over a possible move.

New Gunners boss Unai Emery knows Banega very well. He had the Argentine at both Valencia and at Sevilla. However, Emery’s input in the recruitment of players is known to be minimal and it is not known how much weight his opinions carry.

Certainly, Arsenal have been interested in the past in Banega. Arsene Wenger was known to be an admirer.

The Argentine would once again go against the grain in terms of signings. He turns 30 towards the end of this month. At one time that was the cut-off point in the club’s interest in players. But the club have already signed one player in his thirties in the shape of Stephane Lichtsteiner. The 34-year-old Switzerland international full-back has joined on a free transfer from Juventus.

Leno Signs

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno has completed his Arsenal transfer.

The Bayer Leverkusen stopper has completed a move to the Emirates that has cost the Gunners around €20-25million (£17-21million).

Leno had a release clause with the Bundesliga side who have already signed his replacement in the shape of Eintracht Frankfurt keeper Lukas Hradecky.

“We are very pleased that Bernd Leno will be joining us,” Unai Emery said.

“Bernd is a goalkeeper of high quality and experience. He has been a top performer and regular number one goalkeeper with Leverkusen in the Bundesliga for the past seven years. We are all excited that Bernd has chosen Arsenal Football Club and look forward to start working with him in pre-season.”

Leno added: “It feels very good. I’m happy, I’m proud to sign for Arsenal. For me it’s a dream to play for Arsenal.

He continued: “In Germany, Arsenal are so famous and when I heard [of their interest], I was a little bit nervous but at that moment it was clear for me: I wanted to sign for Arsenal.”

Wilshere Goes

Arsenal have also announced that Jack Wilshere is leaving the club. The former England international becomes a free agent at the end of the month, but he has decided to move on having spent his entire career at the club.

Unai Emery was unable to give Wilshere any guarantees over playing time in his new regime.

West Ham United, Everton and Southampton are all being linked.
