Ronaldo Set For Old Trafford Return?
Cristiano Ronaldo will join Manchester United this summer – that’s if a newspaper report from Italy is to be believed.
Portugese superstar Ronaldo hinted at a Real Madrid exit following his side’s Champions League victory over Liverpool last month. He later back-tracked on his comments but speculation is still rife over his future.
Italian newspaper Libero claims the 33-year-old is a target for both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. However, the presence of Neymar at the French club is likely to prove to be a deterrent to any bid from the Ligue 1 side.
Ronaldo has always favoured a move to Manchester United and manager Jose Mourinho has worked with him before at Real Madrid.
However, there are a number of barriers to any return. First of all there is Ronaldo’s age. Even though he is still tearing up the world of football he is 33 years old and will command a wage in excess of £500,000 a week. On a four-year deal that would take him up to the age of 37.
Plus there is Madrid’s attitude to any sale. Club president Florentino Perez is still an admirer of Ronaldo although there were rumours that he wanted the Portugese to be phased out by former boss Zinedine Zidane – hence Zidane’s decision to quit earlier this month.
But the recent conclusion of Ronaldo’s tax case could lead to him remaining at the Bernabeu. He has agreed to pay a €16million fine in return for a suspended two-year prison sentence. There had been fears that he may end up behind bars. Lionel Messi got a 21-month sentence for dodging €4million worth of taxes – less than a third of the €14million Ronaldo avoided.
Ronaldo’s relief was there to see in Friday’s 3-3 draw with Spain. He played better than he did do over much of the season when he was clearly a man with much on his mind.
A move away from Real Madrid looks unlikely.
De Gea Contract Details Revealed
Meanwhile, David De Gea looks set to become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world when he signs a new five-year contract with Manchester United.
Reports last week claimed De Gea has agreed the deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2023. The news will end Real Madrid’s interest in the Spain international.
But the Madrid-based newspaper Marca claims to have some details about the deal. It reports that De Gea will be guaranteed a gross wage of €21million a year – the equivalent of £350,000 a week – at United. That’s more than any other goalkeeper in the world. His nearest rival is Manuel Neuer who earns €15million a year at Bayern Munich.
Talks began earlier this year over a new deal. It followed a meeting between Mourinho and members of the Manchester United hierarchy towards the end of last year. At the meeting, Mourinho demanded that De Gea’s situation be made secure. There have been constant rumours linking him with Real Madrid who are expected to be in the market for a new keeper this summer.
Mourinho also asked for more money to be made available in the transfer market as he seeks to put up a more meaningful challenge to Manchester City next season.
United have already signed left-back Diogo Dalot from FC Porto for a fee of £21million. The Red Devils are also expected to announce the arrival of midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk in a £53million transfer.
