Transfer Bid Could Still Go Ahead Despite Zidane Exit
Liverpool forward Sadio Mane agreed personal terms with Real Madrid prior to Zinedine Zidane’s departure from the Spanish club last week.
According to France Football, Mane was a Real target last summer. However, they have stepped up their pursuit of the Senegal international since they defeated Liverpool in the Champions League Final ten days ago.
Real have decided to strengthen their squad despite winning a third successive Champions League title. But domestically they were some distance behind Barcelona. They finished in third place in La Liga some 17 points behind their arch-rivals. It was their worst position in four years and their points total of 76 was their lowest since 2007, a season where, ironically, they won the La Liga title.
Real have also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea and Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard. But Mane was regarded as the most straightforward deal and was prioritised ahead of the others.
France Football believes there is still a good chance of the deal going through regardless of the fact that Zidane has departed. It claims that Real president Florentino Perez is spearheading the pursuit of Mane.
However, the report fails to take into account Liverpool’s determination to hold on to the 26-year-old. It is believed that he does not have a release clause in his contract with the Merseyside club. That means Liverpool could either block any move or they could hold out for what they regard as the player’s market value.
Either way, the Reds face a repeat of last summer’s transfer saga where Philippe Coutinho tried to force through a move away from the club. The Brazilian was blocked from leaving Anfield for the Nou Camp only for Liverpool to agree a £105million deal in January.
