Greece International To Have Arsenal Medical
Arsenal are ready to make Borussia Dortmund central defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos their first signing of the summer.
The 29-year-old Greece international looks set to have a medical today with the Gunners. He will move to the Emirates in a deal worth £16million and will sign a three-year deal with the north London club.
The report was confirmed by Papastathopoulos’s father Charalambos who told Greek radio station Radio 24/7 on Monday that the Gunners have beaten off competition from Manchester United for his son’s signature.
“He is happy. He is in England at the moment and tomorrow everything will be done.
“The English league is the best in the world, the most competitive and I believe he will do well.”
He added: “There was interest from United but he had to wait until July for them. United have a very good relationship with Dortmund, the teams talked but Sokratis chose to go to Arsenal.
“Arsenal had talked two years ago but I don’t know why he didn’t sign.”
Papastathopoulos’s arrival means Arsenal head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has returned to his former club Dortmund for the first signing of the summer.
Benatia In Fresh Arsenal Link
Meanwhile, reports from Italy claim Arsenal will make a move for Juventus central defender Mehdi Benatia.
Italian website Calciomercato claims the Gunners are weighing up a move for the Morocco international.
Football Gossip reported last week that the Gunners are interested in the 31-year-old. It isn’t clear whether the Calciomercato report is merely a rehash of the rumours that were doing the rounds last week.
Along with moves for the 29-year-old Papastathopoulos and the 34-year-old Juventus full-back Stephane Lichtsteiner, the Gunners appear to be targetting experience when it comes to their back line. Policy under Arsene Wenger was not to sign players over the age of 30.
Reports on Monday claimed that Arsenal are also interested in Manchester United’s 30-year-old midfielder Marouane Fellaini.
The Belgium international is out of contract at the end of the season.
