Talks ‘To Take Place’ Over Arsenal Transfer
Arsenal are set to have talks with the agent of Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini over a surprise move to the Emirates.
The Belgium international will be out of contract when his current deal with United expires at the end of the month. But French journalist Patrick Juillard claims his agent will have talks with Arsenal this week.
Fellaini was linked last summer with a move to Galatasaray. The Turkish side offered him a five-year deal worth £80,000 a week. That’s roughly what he earns at Manchester United although some outlets have suggested he is on £30-40,000 a week more than that.
Another Turkish side, Besiktas, have also been linked while AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain were both showing an interest before the end of the recent club season.
Milan’s interest goes back to the beginning of 2017.
PSG’s interest may have cooled with the departure of Unai Emery and the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. If Emery remains a fan it would go some way to explaining the latest rumour.
Any move by Arsenal for the Belgian will be regarded as a departure from the club’s transfer policy compared to the Arsene Wenger era. Fellaini is 30, the age where Wenger tended not to pursue a player and only offered one-year deals to current squad members.
But new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat appears to have torn up Wenger’s rule book. Already, Arsenal are being linked with one 34-year-old player, the Juventus full-back Stephane Lichtsteiner. The Switzerland international admitted over the weekend that talks have taken place but that no agreement has been reached.
Strictly speaking, Arsenal should wait until 1 July before approaching Fellaini. He is only allowed to speak to overseas clubs. Should any agreement be reached between the two clubs then an announcement will be made when he is out of contract.
