Kovacic Hints At Move
Manchester United transfer target Mateo Kovacic is being linked with a move away from Real Madrid.
The Real Madrid midfielder was linked with United at the end of January although it was suggested at the time that the Red Devils would wait until the summer before making any move.
Manchester United are two midfielders down this summer with Michael Carrick having retired and Marouane Fellaini set to leave when his contract formally expires at the end of this month.
Kovacic is frustrated at not getting enough game time at Real Madrid. He started just ten games in La Liga last season and was a substitute in 11 more. That compares with 19 starts and eight appearances off the bench in 2016-17. In terms of minutes played the difference is even more stark: 988 this season against 1688 in the previous campaign.
“I believe I’ll play more, whether in Real or somewhere else, now is the time for me to play,” he said on Friday.
“Offers? I am under contract with Real and I do not wish to comment on other clubs.”
Kovacic’s current deal runs to 2021.
Ronaldo Told Team-Mates Of His Desire To Leave
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is still up in the air. The Portugal international hinted after the Champions League Final that he could be on his way out of the Bernabeu. However, he later tried to roll back on those comments by suggesting he would still be at the Bernabeu next season.
But Spanish newspaper Marca is claiming that Ronaldo’s initial comments came as no surprise to a number of his Real Madrid team-mates. He had previously told some of them privately that this would be his final season at the Bernabeu.
Manchester United are favourites to re-sign Ronaldo – should he leave. His comments have caused some irritation among the Real Madrid hierarchy. However, they are confident that his €1billion (£860million) release fee means he won’t be leaving the club without their say-so.
