Bayern Star In Manchester United Link
Manchester United are prepared to pay £79million for the Bayern Munich forward Douglas Costa – if Juventus decide not to exercise an option to purchase.
Costa has been on loan at Juventus since last summer when the Serie A side paid an initial loan fee of €6million (£5.3million). They have an option to make the deal permanent for a further €40million (£35million). However, if Juve fail to take up that option then reports today claim United could step in.
The Sun believes that the Red Devils would be prepared to pay as much as £79million for Costa, although that figure appears to be out of the realms of fantasy.
Costa has been linked with United in the past. The 27-year-old was spotted at Old Trafford during a Premier League clash with Bolton in 2011 leading to reports that a deal was imminent. At that time he was with Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk and he was to remain with them until 2015 when he joined Bayern Munich.
But Costa’s time in Germany wasn’t fruitful. He had a good campaign in Pep Guardiola’s final season with the club in 2015-16 but he fell down the pecking order after Carlo Ancelotti succeeded the Spaniard two summers ago.
Whether Juventus sign Costa remains to be seen. The Serie A winners are looking to strengthen their squad this summer and will sell full-back Alex Sandro – possibly to Manchester United – to finance the signing of new players. Whether Costa makes a return depends largely on finances.
However, the £79million figure quoted by The Sun ought to be taken with a large pinch of salt. United won’t be offering anywhere near that amount.
Plus Jose Mourinho is looking to bolster his side’s defence and midfield before even thinking about his attacking options.
