Gunners Linked With PSG Star
Arsenal are being linked with a summer move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot following his omission from France’s World Cup squad.
The 23-year-old was left out of Didier Deschamps’ 23-man squad and some reports claim he is blaming PSG for an inconsistent amount of playing time with the club.
However, that claim doesn’t stand up to a great deal of scrutiny. Rabiot started in 27 of the club’s 38 Ligue 1 games. He was substituted in ten of those games and a substitute himself in six others. He also started all eight of PSG’s Champions League games.
In truth, Rabiot hasn’t played regularly enough for France at full international level. He has just six senior caps and his two appearances for the side in the World Cup qualifiers were both off the bench. Rabiot was put on the six-man reserve list in case of injury to one of the French squad. However, he refused to agree to the training regime that Deschamps has put in place and is now off the reserves. The chances of him being called up now are non-existent.
Arsenal have been linked with Rabiot in the past. But PSG have earned themselves a reputation of only being a selling club when it suits them. In the summer of 2015 the Gunners rivalled Roma for Rabiot’s signature when it looked as though he would be leaving PSG as he had just one year left on his deal. The Ligue 1 side had other ideas. They put Rabiot in the reserves playing fourth division football until he put pen to paper on a new contract.
But Rabiot has just one year left on his current deal with PSG. All the indications are that with him being a first-team regular with the club he will be offered a new contract – and that he would be expected to sign it.
At present, the chances of him making a move to Arsenal this summer are slim.
