Fred To Become A Red
Manchester United expect to conclude the transfer of Brazil international midfielder Fred before the World Cup starts next month.
The Red Devils are expected to wrap up a deal worth with Shakhtar Donetsk that would be worth around €60million (£52million).
Eyebrows were raised earlier this week when Fred told a Brazilian TV channel that he didn’t expect to sort out his future until after the World Cup. Given that he is part of Brazil’s 23-man squad – and the side are expected to do well in the tournament in Russia – it potentially meant United might not get their hands on Fred until mid- to late-July.
But Fred will be in the north-west of England next week. Brazil take on Croatia in a pre-tournament friendly at Liverpool’s Anfield ground. He is expected to speak to United officials about personal terms and he could even travel to the Manchester area for a medical. Manchester United tend to have part of the medical at the Bridgewater hospital to the west of the City with the physical aspect of the examination taking place at the club’s Carrington training complex just a few miles away. Both are less than 30 miles from Anfield.
Fred’s agent, the former Arsenal player Gilberto Silva, met with him last week before flying to England.
United’s Premier League rivals Manchester City thought they were close to a €50million (£43million) deal for Fred at the end of the January transfer window. The deal collapsed and City have since switched their attentions elsewhere.
Shakhtar’s official reason was that they were still in the Champions League. In reality, City’s offer was lower than the €60million release clause in Fred’s contract. Shakhtar decided to try and hold out for a higher fee.
City are now expected to sign Napoli’s Brazil-born Italy international Jorginho.
