Manchester United will make a move this summer for the Tottenham Hotspur central defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgium international is reported to be top of Jose Mourinho’s wishlist as he looks to bolster his defensive options during the close season. The Evening Standard reports that United are willing to spend more than £40million on Alderweireld who has one year left on his current deal.

Tottenham face a predicament over Alderweireld. They have an option to extend his contract to 2020, but the option includes a clause that would allow him to leave if Spurs receive a bid of €30million (currently worth £26million).

Alderweireld has had talks over a new contract with Tottenham. However, he has rejected an offer worth around £120,000 – more than double his current wages of £50,000 a week. Chairman Daniel Levy therefore faces the dilemma of selling him now or keeping him for the time being and selling for what may well be a reduced fee next summer.

Spurs are already eyeing up a replacement for Alderweireld in the shape of 18-year-old Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch side want €50million (£43million) for de Ligt despite him only having played one full season in their first team.

However, they won’t have the field to themselves. Chelsea, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested.

A departure from Tottenham looks to be almost certain.

Sky-High Fee For Koulibaly

Napoli have put a €100million price tag on defender Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegal international was linked two summers ago with interest from Chelsea but is currently being linked with Manchester United.

According to the Naples radio station Kiss Kiss, Napoli will only entertain bids in the region of €100million (£88million).

Barcelona Linked With Fred

Barcelona have joined the race for Manchester United transfer target Fred. The Brazilian was linked with Manchester City during the January transfer window although the Premier League champions have since turned their attentions elsewhere.

But press reports from Catalunya believe Barcelona would be able to sign the 25-year-old for a fee of just £30million. He is believed to have a release clause of €60million in his contract with Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk and City saw a bid of £43million rejected in January.

Paris Saint-Germain are also following the progress of Fred who has been named in Brazil’s 23-man World Cup squad.
