Forward In Talks Over Future
Manchester United transfer target Antoine Griezmann may not be leaving Atletico Madrid after all.
The France international was linked for much of last season with a move to Old Trafford. However, the transfer collapsed after Atletico’s transfer ban was ratified by the Court Of Arbitration For Sport. That meant the La Liga side wouldn’t have been able to sign a replacement. Griezmann then signed a new deal with Atletico. It doubled his release fee from €100million to €200million although there is a window from the end of the Spanish season next month until 1 July when it drops back to €100million.
Barcelona have been extensively linked with a move for Griezmann. The Catalan side had talks with his representatives before Christmas – much to Atletico’s dismay.
But the Barcelona trail has gone quiet and after scoring for Atleti in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Thursday Griezmann admitted that a departure from the Wanda Metropolitano wasn’t exactly a foregone conclusion.
“Whether I am going to continue at Atletico, I don’t know, we’ll see,” he told BeIn Sports.
“We’re talking to the club to see what can be done.”
Whether Manchester United would still be interested in signing Griezmann is open to some question. The decision not to pursue the Frenchman last summer came at the beginning of June after Atletico’s appeal against their transfer ban collapsed. But the signing of Alexis Sanchez at the end of January was effectively the signing of an attack-minded player brought forward from the summer. Whether Jose Mourinho would still be interested in signing another forward is open to question.
Mourinho is targetting his midfield and his defence this summer. That alone could rule out a move for Griezmann and any attempt to sign the Atletico player will only come if United sell.
