Catalan Side Hopeful Over New Deal
Barcelona have held fresh talks with central defender and Manchester United transfer target Samuel Umtiti.
The France international is currently under contract until 2021. He moved from Lyon in a £22million transfer in the summer of 2016. The €60million (£52million) release clause that Barca placed in his contract was deemed sufficiently high enough at the time to put off would-be purchasers.
But with Premier League clubs paying upwards of £50million for defenders the feeling at the Nou Camp has been that Umtiti could be the subject of a bid this summer. Manchester United have been linked on a number of occasions.
However, the Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims that talks have resumed between Umtiti and Barcelona representatives. Club sources have told the newspaper that the talks went well and that they are confident of agreeing a new contract. That deal would see Umtiti’s wages rise to over £150,000 a week, but it would also see his release increase significantly in a bid to put him out of United’s reach.
The problem with the club’s previous offers is that they have been deemed by Umtiti to be insufficient. This new proposal has met with his approval. He is believed to be happy enough at the club, but he wants the offer to be in line with his expectations after two seasons of solid performances in the Barca defence.
Jose Mourinho is looking to reshape United’s defence for next season. The Red Devils’ back line – rather than Mourinho’s attacking options – are likely to see at least one new recruit.
For their part, Barcelona have seen Lionel Messi, Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Sergi Roberto, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique all sign new deals with the club. They are hoping to add Umtiti’s name to that list.
