Intriguing Ties In FA Cup Draw
Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea will take on Southampton in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
United face a Tottenham side who have played all their home games at Wembley Stadium this season. Both semi-finals will also be played at Wembley leading to a call from some United fans to move Spurs’ semi-final clash as it gives them an unfair advantage.
United defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 on Saturday night in what was another lacklustre performance. Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic were enough to see off the Seagulls in a tie that was a repeat of the 1983 FA Cup Final.
Spurs won 3-0 at Swansea City on Saturday. It was the Swans’ first appearances at this stage of the competition since 1964. But two goals from Christian Eriksen and one from Erik Lamela put Tottenham into the last four. The north London side haven’t won the FA Cup since 1991 when they defeated Nottingham Forest in the final.
Chelsea defeated Leicester City 2-1 in the fourth quarter-final on Sunday. It was the only one of the four ties to go beyond 90 minutes. Alvaro Morata and Pedro scored for the west London side. Jamie Vardy sent the tie into extra time with a goal on 76 minutes.
Earlier, Southampton knocked out the only side from outside the Premier League left in the competition. The Saints defeated League One side Wigan Athletic 2-0 at the DW Stadium. Goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric sank a spirited Wigan side. Both players were scoring for the first time for the Premier League strugglers.
The full draw is as follows.
Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur
Chelsea v Southampton
The ties will be played on Saturday 21 April and Sunday 22 April 2018.
