Juventus Midfielder Still On Manchester United Radar Claims Report
Speculation still claims that Manchester United are interested in Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi. That’s despite counter-claims that a transfer to Old Trafford is unlikely.
France international Matuidi was linked with interest from United when he was with Paris Saint-Germain. However, he moved to Juventus last summer for a fee of over £17million. Since then he has been a first-team regular in the Serie A side with 25 starts and nine appearances off the bench. He has scored two goals and laid on two more.
But Italian TV channel Rai Sport claims United have been in touch with Matuidi’s agent Mino Raiola over a possible move this summer.
United have dealt with Raiola on a number of occasions in the past. He is also the agent for current players Zlatan Ibtraimovic and Paul Pogba while former United winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also a client.
However, Rai Sport adds that Juventus aren’t willing to part with a player whom they regard as an integral part of their first-team squad.
But there is one aspect of the story that suggests Manchester United won’t be making a move for Matuidi and that’s his age. As Football Gossip has already reported, he is 30 years old – he turns 31 next month – and that’s the age beyond which United tend to lose interest in a player.
Current United players only receive one-year contracts once they reach the age of 30.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has had two single-year deals with the club. Bastian Schweinsteiger was signed just as he was turning 31. That was at the insistence of the then United boss Louis van Gaal and it came in the face of the board’s reluctance to do the transfer. Schweinsteiger had one good season then flopped.
The club’s board are unlikely to sanction any bid for Matuidi. Reports of a Manchester United transfer move for the Frenchman appear to be wide of the mark.
