Arsenal Target Wanted In Serie A
Arsenal will face competition from Serie A giants Napoli and Roma if they want to sign the Toulouse goalkeeper Alban Lafont.
The Gunners were first linked with Lafont as long ago as September 2016 when Football Gossip claimed that scouts from the Emirates had been keeping tabs on the young Frenchman.
According to the CIES’s Football Obervatory rankings, Lafont, 19, is the second-highest rated young player in the world behind AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and in front of Paris Saint-Germain’s €160million-rated forward Kylian Mbappe.
Despite his tender years Lafont has already made almost 100 first-team appearances for Toulouse. His performances have brought him to the attentions of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Watford. Real Madrid have also watched Lafont although he would only be second- or third-choice keeper at the Bernabeu. It isn’t a role that interests him.
But the Gunners will face stiffer competition from Serie A. Roma are already eyeing up a potential replacement for their Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson although the 25-year-old will only be allowed to leave if someone offers them €50million (£44million). Liverpool have been linked. Roma sporting director Monchi has Lafont on his list of possible signings.
Napoli keeper Pepe Reina is a target for AC Milan and Lafont is being tipped to replace him. However, the Serie A side are only willing to pay €10million (£8.8million) for a player that Toulouse value at twice that amount.
But the French side appear resigned to parting with their star player at the end of his season. Arsenal could have a vacancy with David Ospina tipped to leave this summer and with doubts about the performances this season of Petr Cech.
Toulouse are struggling in Ligue 1. They lie in 17th place just one position and one point above the drop zone. Relegation will certainly result in Lafont leaving the club in the summer.
