Liverpool have told Real Madrid that they won’t accept a penny less for Mohamed Salah than they did from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho.

Reports from Spain today claim that Salah is a candidate to replace either Karim Benzema or Gareth Bale at the La Liga side. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is under pressure to jettison one of his two under-performing frontmen with Benzema the likeliest candidate to be sold.

That leaves Real set to go to the transfer market for a new forward this summer and Salah is one of the names in the frame.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, Real have been informed through an intermediary that Liverpool won’t settle for anything less than €160million (£142million) for Salah. That’s the price they agreed with Barcelona for Brazil international Coutinho at the end of January. Of that, €40million (around £35million) takes the form of add-ons and bonuses.

Salah is joint-top scorer alongside Harry Kane in the Premier League this season with 24 goals. However, he has the edge over Kane with one every 96 minutes against one every 102 minutes for the Tottenham Hotspur man. His tally rises to 32 in 40 games when cup competitions are taken in to account.

But Salah is one of a number of players being linked with Real Madrid this summer. Neymar is perhaps the highest profile although a transfer deal for the Brazilian is unlikely to take place before the summer of 2019.

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is also a candidate alongside Kane and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. Lewandowski’s age counts against him – he turns 30 in August – and Manchester United are reported to have made an opening approach to his agent Pini Zahavi.

Kane looks set to remain with Tottenham while Chelsea will dig in their heels over Hazard.
