Polish Striker Linked With United, Chelsea
Manchester United have joined the race for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. The Poland international was linked yesterday with a move away from the Bundesliga side. That was after he sacked his long-time agent Cezary Kucharski and appointed super-agent Pini Zihavi as his replacement.
It was reported that Chelsea are ready to make a move should Bayern decide to sell this summer. Now, Sky Sports claims that Manchester United will also make a move if they receive encouragement as to his availability.
The problems are two-fold. First of all there is some surprise that either of those two clubs are interested in a player who turns 30 at the start of next season. Both sides have a long-standing policy of only signing players on one-year deals once they reach that age. Chelsea recently broke their own rule in signing 31-year-old Olivier Giroud from Arsenal. Manchester United did the same with Zlatan Ibrahimovic although he signed only one-year deals at Old Trafford.
The second problem is whether Bayern would be willing to allow Lewandowski to leave. The Pole is under contract at the Allianz Arena until 2021 and is a proven goalscorer. He has scored 29 in 34 games in all competitions this season including six in his last four games. That follows 43 goals in 47 games last season and 42 in 51 games in 2015-16. The German club are unlikely to sanction any exit for one of their key players.
Lewandowski earns around €16million a year at Bayern. That’s around £280,000 a week. But the decision to sack Kucharski and appoint Zahavi is a puzzling one given the length of his contract and the size of his wages. Speculation suggests he is looking for one last payday and to achieve his aim of playing in the Premier League.
The striker was linked earlier this month with Real Madrid. That was Kucharski’s doing. Zahavi will be more discrete.
Manchester United and Chelsea will be watching with interest.
No Manchester United Bid For Alderweireld
Another player Manchester United are keen on is Tottenham Hotspur central defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium international is refusing to sign a new contract with Spurs as they won’t meet his £150,000-a-week wage demands.
According to the Daily Star, United are keen on the 28-year-old but they are less keen on dealing with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
A United bid therefore looks unlikely.
