Manchester United transfer target Sergey Milinkovic-Savic is refusing to discuss his future.
Reports over the weekend linked the Serbia international once again with interest from Old Trafford. Manchester United have been watching the 22-year-old for much of this season as they seek to replace Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini. Carrick is expected to retire at the end of the season while Fellaini is being linked with a move to Turkish side Besiktas when his contract expires this summer.
Milinkovic-Savic – whose brother was once on the books at Old Trafford – was asked about the prospect of a move away from Lazio by the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero. “It’s nice to talk about me, but for now I’m at Lazio – then we’ll see.”
Lazio sporting director Igli Tare added that the club will be demanding a transfer fee of over €70million (£61million).
“70 million is the wrong amount, one which we rejected in the summer.”
That bid is believed to have come from Juventus.
Lazio’s chief problem is that 50 percent of Milinkovic-Savic’s fee must go to his former club, Belgian side Genk. Lazio signed him for €9million in 2015 with the Jupiler League club entitled to a half share of any future proceeds. Talk were due to take place in January about the possibility of Genk taking a lump sum in lieu of any future claim. However, they are just as aware as Lazio as to his value and are currently digging in their heels.
But United aren’t the only side to be keeping tabs on Milinkovic-Savic. Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Real Madrid are tracking the Spanish-born midfielder who has scored nine goals for Lazio so far this season.
Milinkovic-Savic is under contract at Lazio until 2021. The Serie A side are currently third in the table and have a great chance of making the Champions League. They are also in the last 16 of the Europa League and the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.
