Bad News For Liverpool Over Goretzka
Liverpool may have lost out to Bayern Munich in the race for Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka.
The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a move to Anfield. Liverpool have already been in contact with his agent. But the Merseyside club appear to have missed out.
Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona have also been linked with Germany international Goretzka who is refusing to sign a new deal with Schalke. But Bayern Munich appear to be in pole position with reports from Germany claiming they have already agreed a deal.
“You only have an agreement when the contract is signed and the player passed the medical tests. We are not that far yet,” Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said recently. “Now the player has to decide, I heard the decision will be made within the next days so before the end of January and of course it would be very nice, if he decides to join Bayern Munich.”
Those comments have angered Schalke and the club’s hierarchy made their feelings known to the player and his agent at a meeting on Monday.
Despite his contract expiring at the end of the season Goretzka is only in a position at the present time to speak to overseas clubs. That has been the situation since 1 January. He is not allowed to speak to clubs in Germany without the permission of his present side and that has not yet been given.
While Goretzka may go public before the end of the month on his decision to leave Schalke there will be no confirmation about a move to Bayern before the end of the season as a medical examination is unlikely to be sanctioned.
No Sevilla Move For Sturridge
Meanwhile, Liverpool have ruled out a loan move to La Liga side Sevilla for striker Daniel Sturridge.
The Spanish club have offered Sturridge the opportunity to play first-team football each week. They have also offered to pay all of his wages which can get as high as £150,000 a week. However, the offer has been rejected by Liverpool.
Inter Milan are also being linked.
