Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott is a transfer target for Everton. The Merseyside club have joined Walcott’s former club Southampton in the race for the 28-year-old who has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates this season.

Walcott has made just five Premier League appearances for the Gunners this season totalling 47 minutes on the pitch. He has been utilised mainly as a squad player with nine starts in various cup competitions.

Reports from Merseyside claim Everton are monitoring Walcott’s situation at the Emirates although they have yet to make any approach to Arsenal. The Toffees are also interested in Arsenal transfer target Steven N’Zonzi of Sevilla. However, the France international has been restored to the La Liga side following the sacking of Eduardo Berizzo. N’Zonzi had a falling out with the former boss but has featured under new coach Vincenzo Montella and may now remain with the La Liga side. Everton now see Walcott as an alternative.

Southampton were linked last week with a move for Walcott. However, Arsene Wenger insists there will be no exit for the England international this month.

“I want him to stay. I heard that, yes,” he said of Southampton’s interest. “Personally I want him to stay.”

Walcott is mindful that a lack of game time is likely to scupper his chances of making England’s World Cup squad in the summer. His last appearance for the national team came in November 2016 when he came on as a first-half substitute in England’s 2-2 draw with Spain in a friendly international at Wembley.

But Walcott currently earns £120,000 a week and that will be a problem for Southampton. It would also mean Everton having to push out the boat to meet his demands unless he agrees to take a pay cut to move to Goodison.
