Liverpool are playing down reports that they are set to replace the departing Philippe Coutinho with Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez.

It was announced last night that Coutinho is set to move to Barcelona for a fee that could see Liverpool pick up as much as £142million for the Brazilian once add-ons and bonuses are taken into account.

French TV network BeIn Sports is claiming that Mahrez is set to undergo a medical on Merseyside today ahead of a £50million transfer from Leicester City. The Algeria international was linked with Arsenal in the summer of 2016. However, Leicester managed to persuade him to remain with them for the 2016-17 campaign. But Arsenal had dropped their interest by last summer. Mahrez handed in a written transfer request. However, despite offical enquiries from both Barcelona and Roma, Leicester refused to sell.

Liverpool’s offer of £50million could change Leicester’s mind as it meets their valuation of the player. But sources at the Merseyside club claim Mahrez isn’t a transfer target for the Reds and that there has been no contact between Liverpool and Leicester. Sources close to Mahrez add that there has been no contact between Liverpool and Mahrez himself. Arsenal are being linked once again with Mahrez.

Monaco winger Thomas Lemar is believed to top Jurgen Klopp’s wishlist. The France international was close to a move to Arsenal at the end of August only for Monaco to persuade him to stay on for an additional season.

Lemar was also linked with Liverpool last summer although some sources have suggested that the interest was not concrete and that the story had come from somebody within Lemar’s entourage. But Monaco are once again digging in their heels. Their agreement with Lemar was for him to stay for the whole of the season – not to leave half-way through. A Liverpool transfer in this month’s transfer window looks unlikely.
