Tierney Is Manchester United Transfer Target
Manchester United have put Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney on their list of transfer targets. But the Scotland international is just one of a number of defensive players on their watch list.
Tierney has long been linked with interest from Old Trafford. However, Jose Mourinho held off from making a move for the 20-year-old last summer as he felt it was too soon in Tierney’s footballing development.
But Tierney is one of four full-backs being linked with Manchester United. As Football Gossip reported yesterday the Red Devils are also interested in Danny Rose of Tottenham Hotspur and Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham. Jose Mourinho is reported in some quarters to have urged the United board to make a move for Rose. However, any £50million transfer is more likely to take place in the summer.
United are also being linked with Juventus full-back Alex Sandro. The Brazilian is also a target for Chelsea but he won’t be allowed to leave the Serie A club until they find a replacement.
United may well stick with Luke Shaw for the time being. Injuries to Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian, plus a suspension for Ashley Young have meant that Shaw has started three Premier League games on the trot. The 22-year-old’s return to the side at a time when he was being tipped for an exit suggest that any new full-backs won’t be recruited until the summer.
United Extend Contracts
Manchester United have triggered one-year contract extensions for four of their first-team players. Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Ashley Young and Daley Blind were all out of contract at the end of the season, but United have moved to extend their deals by another year.
Mata and Blind have both been linked with moves away from Old Trafford. However, United’s move safeguards their position in that either player may yet secure a transfer at the end of the season. The only difference now is that United would be in a position to receive a fee.
