Armenian Set For Carabao Cup Recall
Manchester United could recall Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
The Armenia international hasn’t started a fixture for the Red Devils since the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea on 5 November. He was dropped following reports of a bust-up with manager Jose Mourinho during a video analysis session of the match at Stamford Bridge. His only football since then has been a second-half substitute appearance in win over Brighton at Old Trafford three weeks later.
But Mourinho was asked at a pre-match press conference whether Manchester United’s squad rotation could mean Mkhitaryan being part of his plans.
“He can,” said the United boss. “I am making a few changes for the match, not many because Bristol is one of the best team in the Championship and for me now the Championship is not the Championship of five or 10 years ago.
“The Championship is now high quality teams with lots of players that could be playing in the Premier League easily. So we need to take the game really seriously. But I am going to make a few changes and it’s possible Micki is involved.
“At the moment we are playing Mata, Rashford, Lingard or Martial, Lukaku so on the bench being Ibra and one of the other ones, Martial or Rashford and there is no space for everyone because you need balance on the bench too.”
Reports today claimed that Borussia Dortmund are interested in a move for Mkhitaryan and Mourinho admitted that after parting with Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin last winter he could well sell again in the January transfer window.
“I think for the right price,” he said . “That’s my approach as a manager. I think every player has a price.
“If a player is not happy, if a player brings with him the request with the number that we consider a good number for us – like with Memphis and Morgan – I would never say no.”
