Diallo, Uduokhai Eyed Up By Arsenal
Arsenal have made an enquiry about Mainz central defender Abdou Diallo. The 21-year-old Frenchman only moved to the Bundesliga side from Monaco last summer. Mainz paid a transfer fee of €6million (worth around £5million).
But Diallo has impressed in the 16 appearances he has made for Mainz so far this season and Arsenal scouts have reported back on him to manager Arsene Wenger.
Mainz are unlikely to sanction any exit so soon. However, they could be interested next summer – if the price is right.
Diallo is one of two young defenders playing in the Bundesliga that have come to Arsenal’s attention. The other is Ohis Felix Uduokhai from VfL Wolfsburg.
Uduokhai is another player who only arrived at his present club during the summer. He was signed from second division side 1860 Munich for €1million (£800,000) and has made 16 league and cup appearances for Wolfsburg so far this season.
The Gunners have also been linked with West Bromwich Albion central defender Jonny Evans. It seems the Northern Ireland international is one of perhaps three targets for Arsene Wenger with Diallo and Uduokhai the other two candidates.
Arsenal’s interest in two young Bundesliga players comes after they recently signed up Sven Mislintat from Borussia Dortmund as their Head Of Recruitment.
The news comes amidst concern over Rob Holding and Calum Chambers. Holding made nine Premier League starts for Arsenal last season following his move from Bolton Wanderers. But he has just three starts and two substitute appearances to his name so far this season along with eight starts in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
Chambers was close to a move to Crystal Palace in January of last year, but the transfer collapsed. He has yet to play in the Premier League in this campaign though he has made one appearance in the Carabao Cup and two in the Europa League.
