Arsenal are confident they have won the race for Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka. However, reports that the Germany international is close to a free transfer to the Emirates next summer are premature.

Arsenal are one of a number of clubs being linked with the 22-year-old whose contract with Schalke expires at the end of this season. The Sun claims the Gunners are closing in on Goretzka; however, the word from Spain is that Barcelona are strong favourites to securing his signature.

Arsene Wenger has had Goretzka watched many time over the past few years. The midfielder is regarded as one of Germany’s brightest young talents. However, he recently spent five weeks out through a persistent bone injury in the lower part of his leg. The injury is consistent with a fatigue strain. Experts recommend three months of therapy and injections and the fear is that he rushed back too soon. He is unlikely to play in this weekend’s Bundesliga clash with Borussia Monchengladbach. However, he is anxious to secure a place in Germany’s World Cup squad – hence the early return.

Goretzka is free to speak to overseas clubs from 1 January about a Bosman free transfer next summer.

“I have to find out for myself what the next step should be,” he said at the weekend.

“I have to consider a million things. I am a person who is very meticulous in such decisions. I play through all the scenarios. So I need time.

“There doesn’t exist a deadline, but I think we are in the final phase. The final decision will be made in January.”

Schalke are anxious for a January transfer if Goretzka doesn’t agree to sign a new deal. He has been offered terms by the Bundesliga side that would see him paid €12million a year – the equivalent of around £200,000 a week. If he doesn’t put pen to paper they will look for a sale in January rather than let him go for nothing next summer.
