Shaw Was At Fault For CSKA Goal
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw was hailed by Jose Mourinho and by the club’s supporters for his performance in the Champions League victory over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night. But it may not be enough to save his United career.
Shaw made his first start of the season and his largely assured performance saw him win the Man Of The Match Award on the club’s Twitter account. Afterwards, Mourinho also spoke highly of the 22-year-old’s contribution.
“Very positive performance,” Mourinho noted. “Especially with the ball going forward, really dangerous, creating a lot, great intensity in his game, no surprise in minute 80 he is feeling the consequences of that intensity, is normal, first match of the season for him.”
But Shaw was at fault for CSKA’s goal just before half-time. He was too high up the left wing as the Russian side attacked in to the spot where he should have been. Mario Fernandes’s cross to Vitinho was put into the net by the Brazilian although it came off the back of Alan Dzagoev.
Shaw is being linked with a move away from Old Trafford in January. It isn’t clear if Tuesday night’s performance was his last chance to prove his worth to Jose Mourinho or if he was just being stuck in the shop window. Only time will tell.
Newcastle United are known to be keen – but the Magpies want an initial loan deal rather than meet United’s £20million valuation. That would especially be the case if the club’s takeover still hasn’t gone through by the time the January transfer window comes to an end.
Shaw’s former club Southampton are also being linked. He arrived from St Mary’s in a £28million transfer in 2014.
Last night’s match was Shaw’s 50th first-team appearances for Manchester United.
