Last Chance For De Gea To Secure Move To Bernabeu
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has told Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea that this summer will be his last chance to move to the Bernabeu.
De Gea was close to a transfer to Real in 2015. Only a faulty fax machine at the La Liga side’s offices stood between him and a move to the Bernabeu. Following the transfer’s collapse, United offered him a new deal that runs to 2019. However, Perez is still keen to sign De Gea. He still sees him as the successor to Keylor Navas who is likely to be sold next summer.
De Gea was sounded out over a possible move to Madrid back in January. He dined with his agent Jorge Mendes – who is close to Perez – and the question was put to him. However, the Spain international enjoys a good working relationship with United boss Jose Mourinho and was in two minds over whether he should move. Plus, he would have to take a pay cut to move to the Bernabeu.
But Perez wants any move for the keeper to take place this summer. He is aware that De Gea is now heading towards the peak of his career – he turned 27 earlier in November – and that Navas turns 31 in the middle of December.
If De Gea decides to stay with Manchester United then Perez will turn to Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois. The Belgium international has stalled on signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge as he waits to see what happens at the Bernabeu. No new talks will take place between Courtois and Chelsea before the end of the season. The former Atletico Madrid keeper already has a family in the Spanish capital from his relationship with Marta Dominguez. The couple split earlier this year.
The third option for Real Madrid is the 23-year-old Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
