Cristiano Ronaldo In Worst Form Of Real Madrid Career

Ronaldo Has One Goal In Eight League Games

Cristiano Ronaldo is on his worst run of form since he moved to Real Madrid in 2009. The Portugese superstar failed to find the net in last night’s goalless draw with local rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday. It was the first Madrid derby to be played in Atletico’s new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

But Ronaldo has now scored just once in eight La Liga appearances for Real in this campaign. He has found the net in all of the side’s Champions League games – six in four games. But never in his previous eight years at the Bernabeu has he scored just once in his opening eight league games. He scored 25 in 29 appearances in La Liga last season.

It is difficult to pinpoint quite what is contributing to this disappointing run of form. There are rumours abound of a rift between Ronaldo and team captain Sergio Ramos.

Ronaldo believes Real are weaker this season following the departures of Alvaro Morata, James Rodriguez and Pepe. Ramos disagrees. But team-mate Marcelo said as far as he was aware there has been no disagreement between the pair.

“I don’t know anything about whether or not Cristiano is unhappy. I don’t know if there has been something with Ramos either,” said Marcelo.

“I just want to play football, I don’t know if they’ve been fighting.”

There are also the stresses of fatherhood. Ronaldo has become a father three more times since the end of last season. Twins were born to a surrogate mother in the USA in June while Ronaldo’s girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez gave birth to a daughter earlier this week.

But there is also the investigation into his tax affairs in Spain. Ronaldo appeared before a tribunal at the end of July to answer allegations that he avoided €14million in taxes on overseas image rights. He has often been quoted as saying that he wants to return to England where those same tax arrangements were nodded through by HM Revenue and Customs.

All of this seems to be putting a strain on his career. Speculation already suggests he could be sold – along with Gareth Bale – next summer. Those rumours will continue as long as his scoring drought goes on.
